Vivo and Oppo are two major players in the smartphone market, known for offering feature-packed devices at competitive prices.  Their latest models, the Vivo S19 and Oppo Reno 12 are no exception.

Both phones offer impressive displays, powerful processors, and capable camera systems. They even have similar price points, so which one should you consider buying? Let’s dive into the details in this article.

1. Display

Both the S19 and Reno 12 feature large, vibrant AMOLED displays with 120Hz refresh rates for smooth scrolling and gaming. The S19 has a slightly larger screen at 6.78 inches compared to the Reno 12’s 6.7 inches, but the difference in screen-to-body ratio is negligible.

Vivo also offers a higher peak brightness of 4500 nits and a slightly higher resolution of 1260 x 2800 pixels compared to the Reno 12’s 1200 nits brightness and 1080 x 2412 pixels resolution. While the difference in resolution and pixel density might be noticeable to some users, the real-world impact is likely minimal.

2. Performance

In terms of performance, the S19 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 7 Gen 3 chipset, while the Reno 12 uses the latest MediaTek Dimensity 8250. Both are capable processors and should handle everyday tasks including gaming with ease.

Storage options start from 256GB and go up to 512GB. However, the S19 offers a higher RAM variant, including a 16GB model, while the Reno 12 maxes out at 12 GB.

A thing to note is that the Vivo S19 uses UFS 2.2 storage for all the variants paired with 8GB RAM and UFS 3.1 for other configurations. Whereas, the Oppo Reno 12 consistently uses UFS 3.1 across all the options.

3. Cameras

The S19 has a dual rear camera system with a 50MP main sensor and an 8MP ultrawide sensor. The Reno 12, on the other hand, features a triple rear camera setup with a 50MP main sensor, a 50MP telephoto lens for 2x optical zoom, and an 8MP ultrawide sensor.

In terms of specifications, Oppo stands out as a clear winner here. However, the final camera output also depends on factors like image algorithms and post-processing. So it’s best to check reviews to get a better idea of their camera performance. Both phones offer similar video recording capabilities, including 4K resolution at 30fps.

Both the S19 and Reno 12 prioritize selfie performance with a 50MP front-facing camera. However, the S19 offers an additional dual-LED flash for better low-light selfies.

4. Battery and Others

The S19 has a larger battery capacity of 6000mAh compared to the Reno 12’s 5000mAh. However, both phones support 80W wired charging for fast top-ups.

Likewise, they offer features like fingerprint sensors, infrared ports, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.4 support for LHDC audio codecs for better audio quality.

5. Price

The Vivo S19 starts at CNY 2,499 (~$344) for the base 8GB + 256GB variant whereas the 12GB + 256GB option costs CNY 2,699 (~$372). The 12GB + 512GB and 16GB + 512GB configurations are priced at CNY 2,999 (~$413) and CNY 3,299 (~$455) respectively.

The Oppo Reno 12 comes in four storage configurations. The base model with 12GB of RAM and 256GB of storage starts at 2,699 yuan (~$372). You can also get it with 12GB of RAM and 512GB of storage for 2,999 yuan (~$413), or 16GB of RAM and 256GB of storage for the same price. The top-end option with 16GB of RAM and 512GB of storage costs 3,199 yuan (~$441).

6. Conclusion

While both the Vivo S19 and Oppo Reno 12 offer compelling features, the Vivo S19 edges out as the more well-rounded option for most users. Its larger display, a wider range of RAM configurations, and larger battery capacity make it a more versatile choice.

Although the Oppo Reno 12 has a telephoto lens for zoom, the Vivo S19’s overall package combined with its even lower starting price makes it the more attractive option.
