Last year, foldable smartphones became a reality and while companies like Samsung, Huawei, and Motorola have already launched their own foldable smartphone in the market, other companies are yet to commercially launch their foldable phones, even though they are working on such technology.

However, it seems that LG is going a step forward and is gearing up to launch a smartphone with a rollable display. As per the report coming from Korea, this project is codenamed as “Project B”. A patent for a similar smartphone was published last year.

As per the report, LG has already begun working on a prototype of this rollable display smartphone and is expected to launch the smartphone early next year. The phone will have display rolling out from the sides and the company will be using Flexible Organic Light Emitting Diode (OLED) to achieve this.

To make this a reality, LG Electronics is working with China-based display maker BOE for the flexible OLED panel. While the rollable display isn’t difficult compared to the foldable display, the difficulty arises in ensuring that the design and other materials and components on the device support this new display technology.

Apart from this Project B rollable display smartphone, the South Korean company is working on a few more smartphones. In the second half of this year, LG will be launching a flagship smartphone codenamed “Horizontal”.

Next year, the company will be launching a smartphone which is codenamed “Rainbow”. However, it’s not yet known what makes these upcoming flagship smartphones from the company interesting.

Recently, the company launched the LG Velvet smartphone which comes with a revamped design. It features a 6.9-inch OLED display with a resolution of 2460 x 1080 pixels and a 20.5:9 aspect ratio. The phone is powered by Qualcomm Snapdragon 765G mobile platform which brings 5G support with its built-in modem.

It packs 8GB of RAM and 128GB of UFS 2.1 storage that can be expanded to up to 2TB via microSD card slot. There’s a triple camera setup on the back that consists of a 48MP primary camera, an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, and a 5MP depth sensor. On the front side, there’s a 16MP snapper for taking selfies and video calling.

The LG Velvet runs the latest Android 10 operating system and comes powered by a 4,300mAh battery with 25W fast charging support. The company is also rumored to soon launch a 4G-only variant of the smartphone.
